Could be, though I think it's happened to a lot of people, particularly if they had a greasemonkey change the belts too.

Looking at the spare speedo I keep next to my recliner (my wife thinks it's GREAT that I have a pile of car parts under the side table!) it looks like it's just a classic make-break coil driven buzzer in there. I betcha it depends a LOT on being snapped onto a rattly plastic housing.

Yeah, I have oil temp and pressure gauges. Given the sensors and their locations (cheap little VDO pressure sensor and drain plug mounted temp sensor) the accuracy of the numeric readings on the gauge scales is definitely questionable, but they're VERY good for keeping track of relative change.
