Oh yeah the looong 1/2" drive & 6p socket is the only legitimate way to go, but there's an almost sensual satisfaction in starting the lug w/ the cross wrench, holding it loosely in the left hand & giving it a good snap so the wrench spins it home in a second or two.  (the joy of working on VW's are the small pleasures & victories...)

Best tool for getting lug nuts off is a real 1/2 drive breaker bar and a good 6 point socket of the correct size. Sears sells the bar and socket for a reasonable price. This will work better than even a cross wrench and the proper fitting socket will instill confidence.
