Don, I have had to replace gas filters on my '84 more frequently than in the past. There were a considerable number of larger rubber-like particles that were in the filter I replaced recently. Van doesn't leave Macon, GA, area so maybe it has to do with fact almost all local fuel comes into town via pipeline.
