At 254k miles FUN BUS still has the original pump. However, since you ran it dry it is most likely damaged. The is usually the end for these pumps. Any dirt that gets into them will also damage them.

The pump design is known as a roller cell. Any dirt or when run dry the rollers will slide instead of roll and scratch the outer race. Thus the noises begin. Also, the fuel actually flows over the motor windings and brushes. Get the right combination of air and fumes into them and they can ignite.

The 84 only had the plastic filter before the pump. There is also a screen in the tank. *^ and later removed the pre filter and used a much better can filter after the pump to protect the injectors. A clogged tank screen will also cause pump noises.

'84 vanagon Should a Bosche FP last more than little over a year? Mine was replaced last summer, along with the fuel filter, but now I notice I can hear it whining when before, that was only with a very low tank. It sounds like it may be on it's way out, again. Or could the filter just be dirty again? I did run the Van right out of fuel recently, testing where my actual "empty" is on my whimsical fuel gauge. Perhaps some sludge from the tank's dregs got into the filter or the pump. I'm about due to replace the filter anyhow, but should I order an new pump at the same time? Is it feasible to put some compressed air backwards through the pump and clean it out some? Is there a second filter anywhere? Thanks Don Hanson
