I just solved my vanagon 2.1 L bucking problem through one of two cleaning procedures last night. I used contact spray cleaner in the AFM (though the inside looked absolutely pristine when I opened it) and the second was to disassemble and clean some rust off the top alternator terminal. It had reached the point that every time the engine temp gauge was half way to operating temp the bucking, backfiring and stalling was chronic till the engine reached the center of the temp light. It seems to have stopped completely as of today. Also, my headlight beam was flickering constantly at almost all rpms before cleaning the alternator contact. It now is very steady except for an almost imperceptable flickering at idle. I must still have a poor ground somewhere.

I know that many people swear by a diligent cleaning of vanagon grounds. I have found one on the engine, and another on the firewall, and know there is one major one somewhere on the differential (?) From some posts, it sounds like there must be dozens of grounds that I haven't discovered. For me the problem is that I need a really clear description of the location of each ground. Is there something like that available? I couldn't find it in the bently.
