Everyone, thanks for your input! I learned a lot. It's a project I'm going to do, as I feel it will help with longevity of my 2.1L DJ-code engine. In regards to experience with synthetic oil, I used it in my '85 Westy which was my daily driver from 2000 to 2004. I put 65K miles in that period, many of them flying down the interstate at 75mph for 12 to 14 hours at a time. I never had or saw any problems, but I didn't have an oil temp gauge to see just how hard I was pushing that engine. Yes, it made it well past 189K miles with original heads and head gaskets, but I don't think I'll be taking the same chances now or driving my current Westy that fast despite the 112hp.
