The nitrile gloves are not expensive if you buy them in boxes of 100 or more. I get mine at an industrial supply house, Gregg's Distributers.

The other thing I find works is to rub dish wash liquid onto your hands before you start. Allow it to dry on your hands. Clean up is easy as you have both a barrier and a cleaning agent already on your hands.

I can't imagine trying to hold onto wrenches etc. with a film of vaseline on my hands. ymmv.
