If the input roller bearing fails, increased leakage will happen. I really think you just have a tired trans and leak is just an observation as you went looking for the source of the noise. The tranny really does not have to be filled. In fact the spec is 14mm below the fill hole. Over filling willmake it run hotter, shift harder in cold weather and of course leak out faster.
