The fridge vent cover is only supposed to be used when washing the vehicle (to prevent water from the spray getting into the vent.) It is not supposed to be mounted semi-permanently. It is not UV safe (which is why it crumbles.)

I've had one in my cabinet now for about 4 years (I made the mistake of leaving the first one on the outside for several months...and like you had it break) .
