As Ron said a few 83.5 waterboxer Vanagons had a different clutch system and flywheel. It is so weird that VW would use the same clutch kit from 76, then change it for a few months and then change back for the rest of the run but they did. I have dealt with this two times. The first time I had no idea about this problem. The second time the customer was aware of the issue since he had already ordered the wrong clutch kit once. The flywheel itself is different, and really I would say if you found yourself confronting this problem, I would just buy a good used flywheel from another Vanagon, have it machined, and install it instead of the odd duck one. That way this problem would no longer be a problem in the future for yourself or any other future owners.
