dear ad watchers what has me "honked off" is the slanderous remarks of the creator of that blog ...

The blog post was slightly more bizarre than the commercial, to my mind. It seems to me that the 'hippies' are living communally because of the stereotype, if you will, of hippies living in communes. They're portraying them as living in the past so that's part of it. Then the guy says "In the VW Routan ad, it's interesting to see a group of aging people living together communally. What a good idea! Something definitely to be added to our toolbox of coping strategies for the new millennium." This is a solution to what problem? He's never heard of nursing homes? Throughout the post he speaks of 'hippies' as if he only knows of them by how they've been depicted in movies, yet he's apparently old enough to know better. Weird.

VW has been in the twilight zone in their advertising for years, which I suppose should not be any surprise considering that the company itself has also been in the twilight zone in respect to the NA market.

In the real world the guy out on the porch would only have stood up to follow the progress of the Routine- er, Routan, so that he could shake his fist and spit at it. I had an image in my mind of them cutting that part out in the editing room. : )

Cya, Robert
