I know very little about automatic transmissions but the guy who ran the transmission shop across the road told me the first, the best, the easiest and the cheapest thing you can do for an automatic transmission problem is to change the fluid. If that doesn't help then it's time to get into something more expensive.

They would pull the pan, change the filter and refill the pan. Then they would disconnect the line from the cooler going back to the transmission and run it with the one guy pouring fresh fluid in and the other watching the old fluid go into a bucket. When the fresh fluid started showing up in the bucket they would stop. All the fluid was then changed. I just jacked the front up and drained it, I wanted to get what I could out of the torque converter. Then I changed the filter and put it all back together, it did help with my problem on that car.
