If you got it at a flaps, it most likely is an Audi stat and has the wrong lower disc. It will one day jam in the bottom of the housing again and keep the engine from warming up. The Vanagon stat is unique to the Vanagon.

Everyone, thanks for your input! I replaced the thermostat, made in China, with one I bought at FLAPS, also made in China, and noticed an immediate difference. The engine warmed in a very reasonable amount of time, more of what I vaguely remembered from my previous '85 Westy, and the temp never ventured above the LED this time.

And also thanks to Vanagonauts website for their nice write up and thermostat replacement tips. I did it in 20 minutes at lunch.
