Dennis,

You are dead on about this oil. testing.

Years ago I worked in an oil analysis laboratory that was run by Page Industries for the US Army helicopter Training Command at Ft. Rucker, AL. The lab took in oil samples from aircraft engine, helicopter engines, and helicopter transmissions. We cataloged the samples, and ran them through a spectrometer to gather data and then plotted the results for each sample to the appropriate engine/transmission. Before I left the lab, we had gotten our /engine/transmission failure prediction rate up to a little over 80% and it was steadily improving. With this data, preventive maintenance was improved, catastrophic parts failure was avoided, and potentially lives save, plus we saved the government a lot of money.

I believe in that oil analysis. Because of my driving habits today, I don't do it, but I believe in it, none the less. It all boils down to how tight you want to stay on top of your machinery and it's issues.
