Yeah Daryl, I've been wanting to get some Sweepco, but haven't been able to find my local dealer guy for it. Would you happen to have a website or some way to find my local guy that sells it, in Southern Oregon ? ....... Medford. Seems I shouldn't have to call Swepco in Texas just to find out who sells it around here. thnx, if you can help, or anyone....... Despite the liklihood of being lambasted by the purists... I am of the mind that the GL5 is OK to run in these things... If you are of the mind that GL4 is the only thing to use...Use it by all means...

I, on the other hand, have seen that most shops figure that GL5 is the new and improved version of the gl4 and use it regularly without issues because most are labeled GL 3,4 and 5 Only those of us on the various lists are typically even aware of a difference.

Of the trannys I take apart to rebuild, the synchro's are not the biggest failure point..It is the bearings going bad from apparently never changing the oil..I mean never...Black as coal and lubricating like coal would...Gear faces wear and the Ring/Pinion are worn drastically in those cases. Good synchros are also moly coated, so the "brass" is not the contact point with the gears.. Yes the 3/4 hubs break, but more and more have been changed thru the years. Bottom line is to use a name brand oil of your choice and change it every 3 yrs or so... I also like synthetics for most of us who just drive ON the road and for rigs that sit a lot. I use regular oil for my daily drivers and Full synthetic for the ones that sit a lot. Dino oil does retain moisture, I am told, by the oil technical info I have read. You can get as technical as you want, but the bottom line is that I see a few hundred trannys each year and fresh oil is more important for the daily drivers... Redline MT 90 is what the vanagons like for a general use oil. Good synthetic makes the innards cleaner, hence less wear.

Swepco for example, it what the Porsche race guys use and it works well for high HP rigs. It appears to makes the R&P wear less compared to a lighter oil such as MT90. Have seen several 3.3 Subie rigs wear the R&P drastically after a years hard use with lighter gear oil in them...Hence I have been suggesting a thicker more racing type oil for the hard driven and high HP rigs to help save them...I see 944 trannys all the time that are raced weekly with very little wear using Swepco. .. .IN MY HUMBLE non engineering OPINION by the way... Gday fellow syncronauts,

Over the years there has been lots of discussion, claims, hearsay, hype, innuendo about GL-5 rated oils in transmissions with brass syncronizers.

It all started way back when VW by edict warned against using GL-5 rated oils in such transmissions and ever since, many have accepted that edict as the gospel truth, rightly or wrongly.

It's one thing to accept such an edict with blind faith, it's another to know the truth from actual hands-on experience.

To try and put this issue to bed finally, my question is ...

Is there available anywhere on public record verifiable evidence from more than just one recognised experienced hands-on transmission rebuilder that GL-5 rated oils DO in fact deleteriously affect the syncro transmission brass syncronizers?

Verifiable evidence please, with relevant links, would be welcomed by the syncro community.

Cheers.

Ken
