This article reminded me of a trip I made a few years ago to a railroad museum where there were many kind of train engines on display. The one that stood out the most to me - the most intriguing - was one that had no boiler, no fire hole, none of that stuff. it was called a yard engine. It worked the yard around a plant operation and had no fuel on board to burn for heating a boiler. The trick on this engine was that instead of a boiler, it had a high pressure vessel for holding compressed steam. The pressure vessel was filled with steam at the plant, then the engine would work the yard all day before having to refuel (re-steam as it were) again that night.

The concept of using compressed gas (air or similar) as an energy source to drive an gas engine may have some validity.

Just my $0.02.
