Allan,
As a manufacturer of fuel system hoses, I would like to know more about this
"goo", and were you got your two replacement hoses.
There are about two dozen common rubber type materials used in the
automotive industry. Only a few hold up to gasoline; Neoprene, Buna, Viton
are a few, but then temperature, friction, sunlight, etc in environment adds
to the mix of things that can break down the material. NO detectable vapor
should travel through the hose and who knows what the goo is doing to the
rest of your fuel system.
For vanagons the only fuel system parts we currently make are the grommets
for the cross over pipe, but I want to hear about the needs of the folks on
this list to help me focus on the parts that are really needed. (Because of
lack of supply, poor quality, or lofty prices).
Still looking for a good auto trans pump, new or rebuilt. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Scott

I just received my order of braided nylon sleeving from
cableorganizer.com[1]. Initial impressions are very good.
I ordered the 1/2" sleeving and it fits perfectly over the fuel hose.
I'm hoping this will help me avoid a repeat of the "goo ooze"
nightmare[2] that occurred only weeks after I replaced my original
factory fuel hose.
Although I'm also using a better grade of hose this time, I wanted to
avoid re-using the original sleeves since a) they're now full of the
goo, and b) I think a more breathable sleeve will help avoid any chance
of a repeat by not trapping fuel vapors that might migrate through the
hose walls. However I did not want to go without any kind of protection
for the fuel hose.
This sleeving was inexpensive (0.67 per foot, and they don't gouge you
on shipping either).
Once it's installed I'll post some follow up pics.
Allan
