Hard drives, a key component in any computer, try and keep themselves at a constant speed, 3600rpm,5400 rpm or 7200rpm. Depends upon the drive. Hard drives found in regular computers (i.e. not laptops) use 3.5" diameter drives. They resist moving, sort of a gyro effect, if you submit them to the bump and grind of driving, the bearings are overloaded and they very quickly fail. Laptops generally use 2" diameter drive. Even at the same speed, they have less rotating mass and tend to last longer. I have used a Dell D600 (laptop 2" drive) for years in mobile applications without any problems or early expiry. I expect the Westy will not be worse than any other vehicle. I was just thinking, it's sort of wrong having a computer component that can spin faster than a WBX :-) Best Regards Dave ------------------------------------------------------------ + To unsubscribe from the Vanagon List send an e-mail to + listserv@gerry.vanagon.com with SIGNOFF VANAGON + in the body of the message. ------------------------------------------------------------ |
