I received a couple of suggestions, thank you.
After I got home tonight I went out to take a look. Trouble light and
warm clothes and all that, I started looking in the middle because
that was the easiest place for crawling under<g>. The rod was clear
and I could move it back and forth with my hand. I followed it back
and was looking at the connection to the transmission, no sticks or
branches in there. Looking closer there was a cable/hose/whatever
resting on the shaft that goes into the transmission. The whatever
was covered and had what looked to be chaffing material around the
part that was resting on the shaft. I reached up there and easily
moved the cable but it fell right back on the shaft.
It was the accelerator cable (and covering) that was resting on the
shaft, the shaft boot was pushed up against the transmission allowing
the cable to get on the shaft and prevent it from moving 'in'.
I put the boot back in place and the cable was resting on it. I
didn't like that, the old boot had already allowed the cable to block
the travel once so I gently held the accelerator cable out of the way
with a large loop of a tie wrap.
I have reverse now and it looks like the 'fix' will keep the
accelerator cable off the shaft.
I'd never heard of this happening before and had never really noticed
where the accelerator cable normally rides. I'll test drive it
tomorrow when it's daylight.
Thanks.
