There is a guy here in Iowa selling a 1.9 for that purpose. I bought a roof rack for my Beetle from him and we were chatting about the 1.9. He says it is a straight bolt on procedure (maybe have to change bell housings or something) and the hardest part is just finding places to put the watercooled parts. He just has a stock rebuilt 1.9 with carbs but its not easy selling a 1.9 for a vanagon in the midwest.
