Subject: Oil Cooler Location opinions

Up for your scrutiny my oil cooler ideas. All points of view are welcome.

Background: I have a 112hp dj-code WBX in my '84 Westy which means it my camper no longer has to slow down when climbing hills on the interstate. With the extra power comes extra heat which I'd like to control to extend the life of my wonderful engine. Also, my family comprises of 2 adults and 3 kids, which means I'll be hauling the optional center seat and my small trailer.

Considered cooler type: http://www.jcwhitney.com/wcsstore/jcwhitney/images/imagecache/G_10855G_CL_1.jpg

1. Mounting a small oil cooler in the place of the a/c compressor. I'd mount it to the a/c bracket where it would get some air from air duct on the left side of the engine bay where my two ECUs currently reside. Small fans optional. Downside is more heat in the engine bay around town.

2. My other consideration is mounting it under the left side of the engine just under the pushrod tin where it would be out in the air stream about level with oil pan. Maybe removing the pushrod tin would give me more room and the oil cooler would "protect" the tubes instead. No fans for this option.

3. A third option is behind the left rear wheel with a shield from rocks, either in the wheel well or just behind it. Downside is mud potentially clogging the cooler.

4. Mount in the front of radiator or under front of the vehicle for best air flow. Downside is long oil lines and potential drop in pressure, although I have seen some Vanagons use this setup. Oil changes would also be a problem since not all oil could be drained from the system without loosening oil fittings.

Mounting them behind taillight is not an option as I have two ECUs on the left and the air intake on the right.
