Florian,

I have shipped wheel and tire packages both UPS, USPS, and FedEx pacakge like most people described here. I put a piece of corrugated cardboard over the vulnerable face, then plastic-wrap the assembly. I also crisscross with packing tape just to be safer. No incidents with over 40 wheels shipped so far. You can band pairs of tires and wheels if you want but makes for a heavier and more challenging package to handle.

I alsmost forgot. You can steap them to a pallet with www.forwardair.com too but they require some sort of cardboard cover nowadays.
