I second the Greyhound scenario. Most everyone has a depot within a close drive of their house. Not all termials can process packages though and many(like the one in Waterloo IA) keep very short hours.

One of the canoe/kayak forums I'm on from time to time has a section where foks can post their needs for transporting canoes and kayaks across country. Something maybe we as Vanagon folk should consider? Usual payment is either sufficient alcohol or sufficient gas money or gift card.
