I always loved the complete failure to understand how the heat flows in the waterboxer evidenced by good ol' TK's "scoop cooler". Transmission fluid is kept at the coolant temperature by the heat exchanger. When he says "the temp needle rides lower" with the scoop, he's basically saying he's using a drag-inducing scoop to lower the coolant temp (via the ATF heat exchanger) below the thermostat temp. He could achieve the same effect by using a lower-temperature thermostat (since ATF temp follows coolant temp) and letting the radiator do the work! An oil cooler scoop is the same sort of thing.

Wow. I like that idea. Might take a little detective work to find hoses that fit, but it looks like it might do the trick. The TDI guys seem to think highly of it, with their chipped n' tweaked heat-blaster engines.

I'm personally leaning towards a thermostatic sandwich plate and air cooler like TenCentLife did, but only because it seems a little more fun to install...
