Joys point is well taken. I've mentioned this a couple of times before. A couple of years ago I did about a 3,000 mile trip with the laptop set up in front testing out two different GPS/Mapping/Trip planning software packages. And the most important conclusion I came to is DON'T try to use the laptop for navigation if you are solo. Fine for a co-pilot/navigator in the right seat but VERY dangerous for the solo driver. If you want to use GPS to assist in navigation get a vehicle oriented GPS unit and a dash mount. And even then pay very close attention to what you are doing, it's very easy to get youself distracted.
