Subject: Strange Idle behavior: Cause found
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252"

A few days ago, I posted that my Digifant injected inline VW four banger was misbehaving. Newer Vanagons share the same injection system, so this may come in handy if you encounter an Oscillating or 'hunting' idle. Mine did that for a bit, going from normal idle up to around 2000 rpm and back down in a regular cycle (about 4 seconds to complete the cycle). Then, the idle became steady at the high rate..around 2000 rpms.. After some testing, I replaced the idle control valve. A pricey item, cylindrical and silver with two hose connections and an electrical input connector. I found one for $229 online and now all is well again. I tried cleaning it first, using brake cleaner, but no worky.. For a temporary fix, should this happen while away from home, you can simply clamp off the small inlet hose, between the intake and the idle control valve, with a pair of vicegrips. This might make the engine idle a little touchy when cold, but it will keep the idle revs low enough to drive the van and it doesn't seem to affect any other performance. Don Hanson
