Ok, so I took my own advice and checked some resistances.

To make things a little more interesting, I dug up some AFM's in the garage for Digifant Golf/Jetta and 85-88 Merkur Xr4Ti's. These units are physically identical to the VW AFM's. They have identical 4 pin plugs.

I happened to have 3 VW units and 3 Merkur. Upon checking all with a digital meter I discovered the resistances are similar. Flap closed, 50-60 ohms. Flap full open, 600-700 ohms.

The one anomaly was a VW unit that was 200ohms closed and 1k open.

My Bosch part numbers for these units:

VW- 0 280 202 106 Ford- 0 280 202 071

Now we just need someone to check their Vanagon unit to confirm. I am almost positive the van AFM will have the same 4 pin plug. For the Jetta AFM the pins to check are 4 and 2. Not sure for the van, but the Bentley for Vanagon 86-92 will show the AFM pinout.

You know, it makes sense. Why would VW re-invent the wheel?

I don't have a factory WBX digifant van to experiment on but I'd bet you could plug a Jetta AFM in the van and it would run fine.

You could also check the resistance at full open and full closed on both units to see if they are similar.
