Larry-

Here's what I did. The top bunk pads are the same size as the bottom
bunk. Go to http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Serta-2-inch-Memory-Foam-Topper-with-Contour-Pillows/2653495/product.html
  and purchase the full size, 2-inch, 3 lb density memory foam
mattress "topper". Cut it down to size to fit the top bunk covers
using the pads as a template. Store up top when not in use - use on
top of the bottom bunk as a topper. 2" of 3 lb memory foam is really
nice to sleep on. It covers up all the bumps and you'll sleep like a
baby.
