Subject: replacing manual transmission
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I'm in need of a replacement manual transmission in my '85 Westfalia. I've located a used one that I'm going to take a chance on, and have decided to install it myself. I've gotten some advice from the Samba on doing it myself, but I thought I'd also ask here. After reading the Samba suggestions, I have a few more questions: I think I've heard that the auto transmissions are different for different year water-cooled Vanagons, but I think all the manual tramsmissions for the 1.9 and 2.1 are the same. Is this right? I was planning to support the engine from above with some sort of sling. Better than using a jack from below? Should I buy a specialized support to lower the transmission? I'll be jacking up the van and lowering the transmission from below. How high do I need to jack up the rear end? I've had two opinions on the slave cylinder. One involves having to bleed the system, one does not, but may involve a little more time. Any other hints or tips? Anyone within a few hours of northwest CT doing this job in the next few weeks that wants some help or would let me watch them pull their transmission? Thanks, Ed in CT _________________________________________________________________ Get 5 GB of storage with Windows Live Hotmail. http://windowslive.com/Explore/Hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_hotmail_acq_5gb_112008
