FWIW, many years ago I put Pennzoil 707 red grease on the manual steering rack in my '84 7 passenger and it's still there and doing fine. Purists might say, "You can't do that" ... but I did.

With the old boots removed (they were torn anyway) and before installing new ones, I turned the steering wheel fully to the left and greased ... then turned it fully to the right and greased. That way I could get to the gears. It certainly has improved the steering. :)
