As others have said it will run. This doesn't surprise me, as the Digi system probably uses a "limp home" rpm base map if the AFM signal is missing. -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Edward Maglott Sent: Sunday, November 23, 2008 6:41 PM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Engine runs with no AFM? I was working on the van yesterday and had the AFM disconnected from everything to look for a water leak in the area of the coolant distributor. It's a strange leak that stops when the engine warms up. So I decided to start the engine and take a look under there. Turned the key and got a horrible noise since the air cleaner housing was sitting on the alternator fan. D'oh! OK, moved that and started the engine and it ran. So no air going into the engine was going through the AFM and the AFM was not connected electrically either. Hmmm, I thought. Must be the idle circuit keeping it running. I opened the throttle and expected it to die, but no, it revved up just like normal. Engine was cold, so was in open loop mode, but still. Maybe since it had no load on it the engine was able to spin up? Seems like it would have gone terribly lean. Any ideas on this curiosity? This is a 2.1 digifant.
