If you just want to get from one place to another, I can recommend the
TomTom after using it to find state parks, campgrounds and
out-of-the-way meeting placed for thousands of miles over the last
year. The TomTom would be fine for road biking but not for hiking or
paddling. You can reset it while you're driving, it's so easy to use.
I can tell you dozens of stories how that thing has saved my butt.
Garmin will never get another penny of mine... those $%^#%& omitted
the old standard NMEA output from the eTrex Vista C I got. They
dropped the standard in an effort to force users to buy their
proprietary crap. That's like buying a car only to find out you had to
buy your antifreeze from the dealer or the heads will leak. Hey, wait
a minute, I did that!
With a computer, I get more use out of my old eTrex that came with
NMEA. I put a nice Topo base map on my Garmin, because I didn't want
to junk what was otherwise a nice device. So while I can recommend the
hardware, I can't recommend the company or its business practices.
