I'd say that unless you know your local dealer is particularly good with locks and keys, skip taking the handle to a dealer. Just like you wouldn't take your seats to the dealer for reupholstery, likewise you should probably not take the locks to the dealer for locksmithing work. If you want a key made inexpensively and competently, pull out the yellow pages and find a competent local locksmith. Look for one with a physical store, preferably one that's established. "Old timers" are more likely to have the blanks and code references for older vehicles. Call and ask if they can make a key by code for your Vanagon. If you have the lock in hand, you can walk in and have it made and test it right there, while you wait. Steve's Lock Shoppe is a good resource, but shipping to and from takes time. Local is definitely faster. Cutting a key by code isn't brain surgery--- even *I* can do it, and I don't do any automotive lock work.

PS: when you call, make sure they know it requires an ILCO X110 blank and have them in stock. The key blank is unique to the Vanagon and not everyone carries them.
