smiles - Even though you now carry decent tools..................you may still get to have some great Vanagon break-down stories. I did start a car by only touching it with a plastic comb once . It's cheating to have the really right tools along, but I wouldn't venture out of town without a pretty full set, plus spare parts etc.

Sure is handy they made the rear hatch work as a perfect weather shield for those breakdowns in rain and snow. Very smart those VW engineers. To be fair, i have learned my lesson, and now carry every tool necessary to rebuild an engine. Its great when you're broken down in a muddy parking lot in michigan, to be able to choose between 3 different drive sizes, deep well, 6points, etc : ) Not to mention screw drivers, spare parts, etc.

Hey the bus is older than I am.... It took a little while to learn!

Driving a 20 + year old Volkswagen Vangon without even a screw driver on board !!?? are you nuts ?! Reminds me of people that drive these old beauties without even a flashlight on board. I had an AFM fall off my '85 on the way home from the opening showing of "LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE" with some friends. That made for a great story....

It did work, it just ran rough and was very slow to respond to throttle so almost impossible to start on a hill. I ended up pulling over, and fixing it with a quarter (i didn't have a screwdriver to tighten the hoseclamp, only a quarter).

Actually, you can drive around half decently. It's not hard to forget that last step of plugging the connector onto the AFM of course, which is how I found out. They run quite well, though unevenly, especially with a lot of pedal applied. I doubt that it hurts anything. The ECU is just temporarily confused about how long to hold open the injectors. I imagine it overcorrects a bit. Also...........WOT is a mode that bypasses some inputs I believe. It'll run that way fairly well. Scott

Yes indeed,

It will run, and you can even move the van around for short distances, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I was working on the van yesterday and had the AFM disconnected from everything to look for a water leak in the area of the coolant distributor. It's a strange leak that stops when the engine warms up. So I decided to start the engine and take a look under there. Turned the key and got a horrible noise since the air cleaner housing was sitting on the alternator fan. D'oh! OK, moved that and started the engine and it ran. So no air going into the engine was going through the AFM and the AFM was not connected electrically either. Hmmm, I thought. Must be the idle circuit keeping it running. I opened the throttle and expected it to die, but no, it revved up just like normal. Engine was cold, so was in open loop mode, but still. Maybe since it had no load on it the engine was able to spin up? Seems like it would have gone terribly lean. Any ideas on this curiosity? This is a 2.1 digifant.
