Sure, most of us worth our salt can do this. If it is done from a door lock, though, it will not work the ignition as there are 10 wafers in the ignition and only 7 in the other locks. There are many ways to generate keys. In the case of the Vanagon, the easiest way is to retrieve the code from a door lock and code cutting a key. This will only work, of course, if the locks have never been changed. Some locks are almost impossible to impression (the ":secret" method to which you refer) but that doesn't mean that keys can't be made.
