People set them to 0 TDC so they could run regular octane fuel.

I remember reading somewhere that setting the timing on a Jetta with a knock sensor to 12 BTDC instead of 6BTDC was good for 6hp

With that being said... with a heavy vehicle like the Vanagon... you arnt' going to notice 5hp - that's less than the difference of having or not having a mild head wind!

I ran mine at 3 BTDC and had no issues at 87 octane fuel - mind you you can really hear an engine when it knocks most of the time.
