There is a cap in the middle of each flange on the tranny. Double check the archives, but I'm pretty sure that if it's failing/failed, tranny oil will seep into the CV. And..... I have read that in a pinch, one can "slip in" some lube under the small end of the boot (possibly motorcycle chain oil) to extend the life of the CV w/o actually removing it. Maybe the PO did that?
