the trans and bell housing will only come out as one piece. ( you can only get the bell housing off the transmission with the trans out of the van ) . You just 'remove the transmission' ...........that's the easiest and most direct way to get to the clutch. I just did a clutch job the other day, and I opted to take out the engine instead...........cause then you have the clutch right in front of you while you're working on it on the engine, rather than doing that all under the van..........bit more work that way, but it's a 'cleaner' job that way, no CV joint grease in your hair, etc.

tips ? ......... it's a good time to service the CV joints, if the trans is coming out. I at least add some moly grease to inner CV joints. oh, here's another one. I find the pilot bearing shot in at least a fourth of the vangon clutches I see. And commonly the little metal ring that is pressed into the flywheel, that holds the felt pilot bearing dust seal in place, is missing, and thus the pilot bearing is just rusty dust and totally gone even. I figure that shops send the flywheel out for resurfacing. The machine shop removes that little ring, then they throw it under on of their workbenches, never mention it to the shop, the shop never thinks about a pilot bearing dust seal when they put it back together, and then the pilot bearing is shot in about 2 or 3 years. You can't get that little metal ring separately either, not that I've been able to find. I have about 6 flywheels missing that little part.

Lube everything that moves, pivots, or slides in the throw out bearing cross shaft area. That means the guide tube the TOB slides on, the tips of the forks where it rides,.........and spray lube the cross shaft where it pivots in the bell housing until it moves easily and smoothly. Lube the ball pivot at the tip of the cross shaft lever where the slave push rod pushes on it. I always change the clutch hydraulic fluid too - i.e. bleed the clutch hydraulic fluid. That should be done every two years anyway. I get a 'new' used vanagon in stock, and that's one of the first things I do to it ..........quite often people never change the clutch hydraulic fluid, and it should be done every two years just like brake fluid.

Do perfect workmanship. I am not kidding you...........almost ALL work I see done on vanagons by shops is sloppy or short somehow. Things left off, foreign things left in the area etc. etc. Have fun, do good safe work !~ Scott www.turbovans.com
