I bet that's what the 'runny' grease is from...The P.O. "injecting" some oil to quiet down the CV at the wheel end. I don't see how oil could be down there from the transmission. Thanks all for the insight. I was planning on packing around the least worst (sic) CV of the ones I replace, as an emergency spare...Standard practice for me...when I replace a worn but working part, I usually stick the old one into my spares 'stash' under my rear seat, just in case. Some of the 'towns' I visit don't even have phones, much less vanagon parts..
