Hi Volks,
Since I got the Wolfsburg back in April I have logged over 18,000 daily
commuter miles, driving a mix of highway city with the van to work and
camping on weekends.
Since then, I have experienced many of the usual vanagon issues as
discussed on the Vanagon list on a daily basis:
#1 tire replacement
#2 Rear brakes
#3 Speedometer/Odometer repair
#4 Headlight switch
#5 Transmission whine/fluid change
#6 Power steering and Alternator belt replacement
Nothing unusual, I fully expected to deal with this kind of stuff with
the number of miles I've been piling on to the van.
And tonight I resolved the most recent issue, the failure of the slave
cylinder. The problem first surfaced a week ago, when I stalled the van
leaving my driveway as the clutch engaged a mere half-inch off the
floor. Double-pumping brought it back up, but doing that on every shift
gets old fast. And then the cold snap hit... -10C and windy was way too
cold to be working outside; esp. since I had to work a trade show on the
weekend; I just didn't have time to get sick.
Tonight I made time after I got home from Boy Scouts to put the van up
on ramps and don my long-johns and coveralls for some quality time on my
back in a snowy driveway. Luckily the drive home from Scouts had warmed
the engine just about perfectly and the weeping slave cylinder had made
the bolts holding it to the transmission nice and easy to turn. With my
Dad along to help out handing me wrenches and offer moral encouragement
I was able to get the job done in a mere 80 minutes.
Shifting is now smooth and trouble-free, the pedal engages nice and high
like it used to. Hooray for me!!!
Muchos Gracias to Frank Condelli for parts and advice and to Dad for the
assistance tonight.
Happy Trails,
Greg Potts
