Hi Volks, This afternoon I found some quality time to spend in the garage and decided to take a look at the 2.1L driveline I acquired recently. The main bearing in my current transmission has been pretty loud since September and I have arranged the time and space for a transplant over the Christmas break, so I am getting things together now to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. Luckily the engine, transmission and starter are all connected and the spark plugs still out from the compression check I did a few weeks ago. I started off by connecting a battery to the starter in order to make sure the transmission worked smoothly in all gears. I was somewhat surprised when NONE of the gears would turn the driveshafts. So before I lost all hope I looked at the clutch lever and it was quickly obvious that the slave cylinder was frozen in the engaged position. Which is kinda weird, but it wasn't too difficult to remove the slave cylinder and get back to business. Running the transmission in all 4 forward gears went smoothly, as did reverse. I don't have any qualms about using this transmission in my vanagon; I'll simply use the new slave cylinder I just installed on my current transmission and do a fluid swap while I am at it. So then it was time to separate the engine and transmission and inspect the clutch disk. The bellhousing was very greasy, but the flywheel and clutch disk were spotless; other than a considerable rust coating. I have to figure that the oil in the bell housing was deposited by the original engine, as the current motor, flywheel and clutch disk are very clean and dry. http://www.pottsfamily.ca/Vanagon/clutchdisk/flywheel.html The clutch disk measures between 8.3mm and 8.4mm and appears to be in very good condition. I don't see any reason not to swap in this clutch disk when I install this transmission.
