My 1st '87 Vanagon was only $500 because of a catastrophic oil leak. I saw that it was the oil cooler o-ring, so I had it towed a few miles home and bought the o-ring at the dealer and a few spares. The old one had severed-not sure how- overtightening? NAPA and Harbor Faint have the nifty plastic gizmos to cross-clamp the coolant hoses. Good time to replace them. Flush the system. Change oil.
