John,

Before making wheel/tire changes (I now have the Gary Lee hatch spare tire/gas can/bike rack mounts) I was using a Yakima roof rack on the rear hatch. I modified the feet/towers so the rubber foot sits right next to the edge of the hatch, not on the rear window. Works great. I've had 4 bikes on it.

The towers and bars are for sale if you're interested. $75.00 plus shipping. No bike/fork mounts included. I'm in salt Lake City

I, too, use a Yakima rack mounted to the rear hatch. I carry 3 bikes and six wheels back there, no problemo. Keeps all that stuff out of the air stream, too, for less aerodynamic drag. What I did is I took some short sections of stainless steel or aluminum stock (I think it may even be an old Westie curtain track) and I pop-riveted four short sections near the edge of my hatch. The Yakima rack's feet fit right into those little sections (make em slightly longer than the tower 'feet') and the clamps just go around the edge of the hatch. I painted them and they blend in with the Turd Brown of the van. The bikes don't hinder opening the rear hatch, other than making it a little heavy. I cut some pvc conduit to put over the hatch struts to hold it open when there are bikes on the rack and I have my 'van broom' cut to the right length to use for an 'extra' hatch prop along with those pvc/strut jobbies...With a load of bikes, that hatch would hurt if you were bent over in there and it somehow slammed on you..
