Subject:      2.1L DJ-code WBX into '84 Westy - first 1900 mile trip impressions

This Thanksgiving weekend I took my '84 Westy "Hershey the Wunderboxer" on a first long trip from GA to TX, and back. My family actually came along too. If you can imagine 2 adults, 3 kids plus luggage, all accounting for about 750 lbs of extra weight in the vehicle. The results have been nothing short of amazing for a WBX-powered Westfalia. First of all, the engine is a DJ-code WBX with 112hp which I transplanted in its entirety, to include the cooling system, ECU, harness, FI, and stainless exhaust system with an ss Dansk muffler (thanks for the exhaust bracket, Terry!), into my '84 out of an '89 16'' Syncro Dehler camper, a process covered in several previous posts. The engine makes enough power that an even loaded Westy does not slow down going uphill where previously I had to work to maintain speed and momentum. I simply depress the accelerator a little and up she goes. There's enough power to cruise at 80+ if you wish. I cruised at a leisurely 70 mph and averaged 18 MPG over the 1900 mile trip. Compared to a 1.9l WBX this engine is a monster while returning same or better MPG.

Several observations I'd like to share:

1. Every Westy WBX should be a DJ-code WBX, but I'm biased. 2. Every Vanagon should have an oil pressure and an oil temp gauge. 3. It's amazing how inventive people get when given the option of utilizing retina-burning high-beams on the interstate. 4. State troopers on I30 near Dallas are extra-vigilant. Make sure your license plate lights are working! 5. A Blackberry and Google Maps are great for finding your way or finding Starbucks in the middle of a foreign state.
