You are right - somewhere around 5000 Kelvin is "pure white" the higher the number the lower the light output. 

I have seen 4300 and 6000s side by side and can't really tell a huge difference - sometimes I think they are all the same or subbed out in that range as the average Joe can't tell.  More accurately it should be colors - yellow - white - blue - violet - pink - why anyone wants these superhot colors is beyond me!?
