Well folks,

I found (at least part of) the problem. The car is still in pieces though.

It was a right outer roller bearing, part no 211501283D , Brand KMM!

Now is THAT Chinese?

I decided to look at the right side first as I used a stethoscope and when I jacked up the car and ran it that way reckoned there was a bit of noise there that sounded a bit like a railroad over an above the other noises on that side and compared with the left.

One of the rollers fell out of its cage as I removed the axle!. When I tried to turn the bearing by finger it was a little rough. I finally got the outer bearing off and as I cleaned it a large number of flakes of silvery metal washed out onto a rag with the Kerosene. When I had cleaned out the grease properly, through the gap in the cage where the roller had fallen out I could see quite bad grinding and score marks on the inside of the outer race. These extend in patches about 25% around the inside of the race! I'll take some photos.

My replacement is NOT KMM.

This is NOT good for a bearing after about 5,000km and I am hoping the other side doesn't suffer the same fate!

The Inner bearing seems fine.

Thanks for your interest folks . . I would be very interested to hear experience with KMM bearings and any other parts. I'll be sure to let my US supplier know, pronto!.

All the best from downunder

Dave

NB A correction to my original post. Sorry for the confusion, but the symptoms DO fit the info now.
