* Many stereo shops (including Crutchfield) will try to limit you to stereos that match the OEM depth of it's radio. Don't let them. The Vanagon can take a full depth single DIN unit (I've done this a number of times.)*

Agreed.

I actually installed a full-depth Pioneer in my '87 with no issues at all. It was a pretty slick deal, all around, relatively affordable, very easy, and a fast install (at a trusted shop): * Stereo unit (detachable face) * 100-Watt amp (flat) placed directly under the passenger seat. * Two 6x9s installed into the wood panel under the rear 3-seat (they cut out the holes for them) * The stock speakers weren't in that bad of condition, so they left them as-is in the front and put 'tweeters' in the back to balance out the high-end.

The sound was phenomenal (comparatively) and definitely worth the money.

As far as cassette decks and remotes, I know that I have (even recently) seen brand new units that have cassette decks built into them, and I know that remotes for car stereos are nothing new.

While I've never actually LOOKED first-hand for a cassette deck unit with a remote, don't think it would be TOO terribly hard to find one. . . .

Anyone tried before?

-Drew '90 GL "Blackbeard" (who is getting a new stereo when he gets outta the clink)
