Fellow Vanagon Listee's
It's not exactly easy, but not that
difficult either:
Yes the GET command
is what I used, but you have to first get
a list of the archive files.
send an email to gerry
listserv@gerry.vanagon.com
with the subject: VANAGON FILELIST
That gives you an archive list.. then I used
gnu emacs (any text editor with 'rectangular'
(e.g. columnar cut/paste)will work,
to formulate a list of 'GET' commands..
So.. see the following snipping of the
return of the first command......

Then you send another formatted email like the following to
gerry (same address as above)
You can put these commands in the body of the email as I recall..
Want to grab the first few? (the filename's changed BTW, so this still
doesnt preclude running the 'FLIELIST' command for yourself!
GET VANAGON LOG0001
GET VANAGON LOG0002
GET VANAGON LOG0003
GET VANAGON LOG0004
GET VANAGON LOG0005

The cool thing is now that I have Google desktop search
enabled on my Windows or Mac, it will cache a local copy
of the search index on said machine. Then I dont need to
necessarily be connected to the internet to retrieve the
info I'm looking for. (of course, you have to be connected
for the initial indexing to work)
This takes the methods the other folks are using a step
further and makes it more portable/avail offline.
It is true though, most everything has been discussed about
these vans 'ad naseaum' :-) so the early archives dont
necessarily reveal any new info that the last 5 years or
so dont contain. It is cool to be able to search by
name of poster, say Dennis Haynes, Benny Boy, Boston Bob (RIP)
and many of the other list 'illuminati'
hope this helps, but that being said.. please dont go
hammering the server with a ton of these commands, I'd
imagine if everyone does this, it's gonna bring gerry
to his knees!
All the listserv commands can be retrieved by issuing
a 'help' message to gerry.
