I tried to deal with South Africa directly about 8 years ago. It is
about as fun as Chinese water torture. The people are so friendly and
nice but they are slower than an ice flow in the middle of January. It
took me two months of calling back and forth, and even getting documents
with part numbers and exploded views of parts for the VW parts
department guy to have the heart to tell me that they couldn't sell to
me directly that I would have to go through a local dealer. Right now,
because the Vanagon was discontinued, they don't have all of the excess
parts to sell like they used to. They have to keep parts on hand for
all of the "Caravelles" that are still in SA and they don't seem to want
to come off of any stuff to sell outside the country. I think the folks
that actually get things from over there must either go over and buy it
from a dealer they know or have a local that does this for them. That
is just buying the parts, I don't even want to talk about getting them
shipped over here and then getting them through customs. What a nightmare!
I am very sorry to hear about Tiico dissolving. I have known Peter ever
since he first started selling the conversion and I installed one of the
first ones. I wish him the best.
