just rebuild those wires.
it's a 20 + year old VW after all..........
it's semi-normal for this to occur.
I've seen this before on vanagons.............I'd just re-do it very
carefully, keep and eye on it for a while, always carry a fire
extinguisher - you know,
like 'normal' for any 20 + year old Volkswagen.
Actually, I regard this as 'good' that you've discovered something that
needs attention, and deal with it now, rather than later when it either
causes a no-start or a fire.
if 'switch' you are referring to is on the power steering
pump...........that's just to tell the ECU if the PS pressure gets a little
high, to up the idle a tiny bit, like if you were parallel parking say.
not all PS vanagons have that switch , it's not an critical item or
anything.
